Valsella Chorus

The Valsella Chorus is the second by seniority in Trentino, and was founded in the Valsugana, a particularly fertile area for folk song; many famous songs that now are part of the "classic" repertory come from this area, where wide-spread vocal tradition has led to the creation of one of the most important and prestigious manifestations of Trentino choral activity, the Valsella Chorus. The special characteristic of this Chorus is an attentive and rigorous search for and collection of folk songs that, harmonised by great Maestro's such as Aladar Janes, Andrea Mascagni, Antonio Zanon and many others, have become the originai repertory of the Chorus, and are known worldwide through concerts in the great theatres as listed in the Curriculum published. The songs have been recorded on three LPs "Vecchia Terra, Vecchie Canzoni" (Old Land, Old Songs) and on a CD produced to mark the sixtieth anniversary, entitled "Sotto le tue finestre" or Under Thy Window, taken from the name of one of the most suggestive songs harmonised by Andrea Mascagni. Authoritative critics such as Giovanni Acciai and Quirino Principe, once Artistic Director at La Scala in Milan, have been interested in the Chorus, and Principe wrote: " the Valsella Chorus, an essential element of and vehicle for the artistic and cultural panorama in Trentino, has supplied an irreplaceable and invaluable contribution to the conservation of a cultural heritage to which the image of Trentino is indissolubly linked ...Artistically versatile as few others, the Valsella choristers create as to the suggestions of their texts, atmospheres candid, transparent, or mysterious in which unity reigns, but can also offer solos where pathos or irony dominate, bringing surprise or triggering subtle emotions and unrepeatable feelings" In 1997 the 60th Anniversary of the Chorus' foundation was marked by the International Prize "Fontane di Roma" -The Fountains of Rome -a prize that in its Roll of Honour includes some of the finest names in the fields of Culture and Science. The Chorus is directed by Maestro Ferdy Lorenzi, and today has forty singers, from ali parts of the Valsugana. The President is Elio Dandrea.
